Speeding in Jersey City is charged under N.J.S.A. 39:4-98 and heard at Jersey City Municipal Court, 365 Summit Avenue. Points are 2 for 1–14 mph over, 4 for 15–29 over, and 5 for 30 or more over; fines double in 65 mph zones and construction zones. Most tickets can be amended to unsafe driving (39:4-97.2), which carries no points, when counsel appears.
39:4-98 sets the limits — 25 mph in residential and business districts, 35 in suburban areas, 50 or 55 on highways, 65 where posted — and 39:4-99 makes exceeding them a violation. The fine itself is modest, but the MVC assigns 2, 4 or 5 points depending on how far over, and 20 mph or more over the limit in a 65 zone or 10 or more over in a construction or safe-corridor zone doubles the fine. Six points within three years brings a $150 surcharge plus $25 per additional point, billed annually for three years. Twelve points is a suspension.
Insurance is the larger cost. New Jersey carriers use the MVC abstract, and a 4-point speeding conviction typically raises premiums for three years. That is why a no-point amendment to unsafe driving — a $250 surcharge and no points, available twice in five years — is worth contesting for. Jersey City prosecutors grant it routinely for drivers with clean abstracts when counsel appears; it is not offered to people who pay online.

Speed in Jersey City is measured by radar, lidar, and pacing, and each has a foundation the State must prove: a calibrated unit tested with tuning forks before and after the shift, an operator trained on that unit, and a clear tracking history. State Police tickets on the Turnpike Extension usually have that record; local pacing stops on Kennedy Boulevard often do not. When the foundation is missing the ticket is dismissed, and when it is present the prosecutor is still willing to amend for a clean driver.
Jersey City Municipal Court accepts letters of representation and handles most speeding tickets without the driver present. For clients outside New Jersey — a large share of Turnpike and tunnel stops — that means the case is resolved without a trip back.
Two points for 1–14 mph over the limit, four points for 15–29 over, and five points for 30 or more over.
Yes. The most common resolution is an amendment to unsafe driving under N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.2, which carries no points and a $250 surcharge. It can be used twice in five years.
Not if we represent you. The court accepts letters of representation by email and we appear on your behalf; most speeding matters are resolved without the driver present.
New Jersey reports the conviction to your home state under the Driver License Compact; how your state assigns points varies. New Jersey itself does not assess points against out-of-state licenses but does apply surcharges and can suspend your privilege to drive in the state.
